ABOUT WANU

Wanu is led by Jorge Montezuma, a versatile consultant with over 12 years of experience working in the public and private sectors. He has worked in more than 30 composting projects across the country and visited over 100 large and small organics recycling operations. His experience spans from strategic planning and site design all the way to construction, staff training, and site improvements. He is a graduate of NC State University, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Quail Springs Permaculture.

Beyond project-level involvement, Jorge served on the Board of Directors for the US Composting Council (USCC) and the NC Composting Council and was involved in the CA and MD-DC USCC state groups. He participated in developing the USCC Model Zoning Template and Guidelines, is a Contributor Editor to BioCycle Magazine, and has presented and moderated panels at multiple conferences. Notably, for over a decade Jorge has trained composting professionals through CREF Compost Operations Training Course, and in 2019, he developed CompostCalc—a free online composting mixture recipe calculator (link at the top of the page). The combination of these diverse experiences have equipped him with a vast knowledge base, strong network, and creative problem-solving abilities.

Wanu maintains professional relationships with various respected consulting firms who can enhance a project team as needed for tasks such as civil, geotechnical, and others.

Wanu is the quechua word for guano, excrement from seabirds very rich in nutrients. In the 1800s it was imported from Peru into US agricultural soils. On Jorge’s picture above, he is visiting the Guano Islands near Lima, Peru.
